Infrastructure (WP3)

The goal of this work package is to guarantee the respect of all major librarian standards and to provide the tools by which the librarian(s) can perform any operation of administration of the cross language information retrieval platform. Moreover this work package will provide the necessary interfaces to access different databases/OPAC systems and communication protocols. These interfaces are necessary in order to promote adoption of the system by different libraries at reasonable costs (commercial exploitation).

Adherence to standards will be guaranteed by verification by The European Library (TEL), a free service that offers access to the resources of the 48 national libraries of Europe in 20 languages. Each time a conflict with existing standards is noticed a special re-engineering cycle will be initiated.
Concerning the maintenance/administration, it will be web based and will use consolidated technologies such as Apache as a web server, Tomcat as an application server and XML as a communication/configuration language. It will not communicate directly with the catalogue/database, but communication will be mediated by a set of programmatic interface wrapping the concrete database layer.
Implementation of these interfaces will allow to easily plug in the whole system to different catalogues.

Work package leader:

Free University of Bozen-Bolzano

Deliverables:

  • D 3.3. Implementation of access interfaces and basic administration routines : M12 [confidential]
  • D 3.4. Final Report on standards compliance: M12 [public report]
  • D 3.5. Final implementation of the administration routines : M18 [confidential]
